Improving Methodological Toolkits to Objectively Measure Digital Media Use
The relationship between digital media use and adolescent mental health and wellbeing has been a growing area of concern, especially with a rise in mental health vulnerabilities among youth. To fully capture this relationship, improved measures and methods are required to understand the granular nuances of digital media use. In Paper 1, authors collected high-intensity data from adolescent smartphones to objectively measure use patterns and found associations between higher average daily app switching and higher perceived smartphone addiction. In Paper 2, authors quantified the consistency of app-specific social media use using screenshot analyses and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to capture social media use consistency. In Paper 3, clinical cut-off scores for the Problematic Media Use Measure-Short Form (PMUM-SF) were developed and validated for use with adolescents to explore associations with clinical symptoms and school performance. In Paper 4, authors investigated fluctuations in mood among adolescent Android and iPhone Instagram users through EMA and daily diaries over the course of 10 days. These methodological and measurement improvements facilitate the objective and granular exploration of the relationship between social media use and adolescent mental health and wellbeing. Together, these studies illustrate how the use of clinically meaningful thresholds for self-report data, in addition to objective and intensive longitudinal methods such as screenshots and EMA improve our methodological toolkit and allow us to better capture adaptive and maladaptive uses of digital media for youth.
