Youth's Prosocial Development in Three Ecoculturally Diverse Contexts
Across the globe, youth thrive while living in diverse ecocultural conditions, be they proximal or distal. This symposium aims to demonstrate the unique challenges and opportunities youth face in their local environment and how they develop a range of prosocial competencies to adapt and thrive. Adopting a sociocultural lens, three studies conducted in rural China, urban France, and the United States highlighted youth’s different forms of prosocial behaviors and their antecedents and outcomes. Children from a rural village in China support their families by taking on household responsibilities and endorsing caregivers’ support, especially when families are faced with parental migration. French youth demonstrated high levels of caring, helping behaviors, and cognitive empathy when their family context is characterized by high levels of positive and low levels of negative behaviors. Asian and Black youth from the U.S. readily act to promote societal justice when they embrace social justice values and care for others’ urgent needs. The scholars utilized modes of methods (e.g., interview, video recording, and survey) and different analytical strategies (e.g., observational, thematic analysis, latent profile analysis, and path analysis) to demonstrate positive development outcomes aligned with local affordances and constraints, underscoring the interplay between cultural dynamics and human development.
