Generative AI in Children's Learning and Education
Generative AI (GenAI) capacity development is accelerating, and the rapid deployment of GenAI technologies into children’s learning spaces means that research must be comprehensive, technically-informed and forward-thinking. This panel assembles three cutting-edge researchers working at the intersection of children and GenAI who embody these principles in their approach. Paper 1 will describe research on whether children aged 4-8 can differentiate between AI and human conversational partners using a Turing Test-inspired paradigm, with implications for children's social development and the design of AI in educational settings. Paper 2 investigates high school students’ use and misuse of AI chatbot technologies, and speaks to the question of whether GenAI seriously diminishes academic integrity in the classroom. Rounding out the educational focus, Paper 3 investigates whether the presence of GenAI impacts educators' choices when deciding on EdTech for K-6 students. GenAI will likely have broad impact on children’s learning and educational outcomes, and this panel highlights the complexity of GenAI deployment in children’s learning and education contexts by presenting a nuanced view of how children, teens, and educators interact with these systems.
