Exploring Multi-level Influences on Parenting Within and Across Diverse Contexts
This symposium examines caregiving across multiple levels of analysis and diverse ecological contexts, revealing the intersecting complexities of environmental influences, parental mental health, and individual caregiving behaviors. The first paper focuses on the parent level, highlighting how maternal alcohol dependence and psychopathology shape nuanced caregiving behaviors during early childhood problem-solving tasks, with significant implications for child development. The second paper addresses external influences by examining how neighborhood risks impact mothers’ and fathers’ emotional socialization strategies, illustrating how both distal and proximal environmental pressures intersect to shape parental responses to children’s distress and affect children’s socioemotional outcomes. The third paper explores intergenerational effects, investigating how caregivers’ histories of childhood maltreatment influence harsh parenting during adolescence, with undertones of the first paper's focus on maternal psychopathology and the second paper’s emphasis on contextual factors that inform parenting practices. Together, these studies illuminate the intersecting elements of the caregiving puzzle by linking factors at multiple levels of influence — from the parent to neighborhood contexts and intergenerational dynamics — to child and adolescent development and adjustment. This multi-layered perspective offers a more holistic and nuanced view of the complexities surrounding caregiving, family processes, and developmental outcomes. The symposium not only provides valuable insights for targeted interventions but also sets the stage for future integrative research that bridges these levels of influence to better understand and support caregiving across diverse ecologies.
