Risk and protective factors of early child development in global contexts
Children in low- and middle-income countries are disproportionately exposed to multiple early life adversities that threaten their developmental potential. These risk factors are diverse, span across socioecological levels, and vary across countries. Identifying the key determinants of early child development in diverse settings globally can inform more effective and context-relevant strategies for improving child development around the world. The four studies in this symposium highlight the role of various psychosocial and biological factors in shaping early child development in diverse global contexts. The first study identifies caregiver social support as a protective factor for child development that is partially mediated by parenting behaviors in a representative sample of caregivers with children aged 0-6 years in Brazil (N=1,954). The second study focuses on a sample of teenage mothers with children aged 0-5 years in a different state in Brazil and neighborhood violence as a risk factor of maternal parenting behaviors (N=246). The third study shows that fathers’ alcohol use is negatively associated with paternal stimulation and early development for children aged 0-2 years in Kenya (N=642). The fourth study uncovers a range of factors from individual and maternal to household-level factors that are associated with EEG-based brain activity among children under aged 2 years in Bangladesh (N=596). Together, these studies reveal how various factors influence child development and should be targeted more comprehensively to promote the developmental outcomes of young children in global contexts.
