Caregiving, household resources, and child well-being in communities in the Majority World
A bulk of what we know about caregiving and child-well-being is predominantly derived from research with White, middle-class children living in the Minority World (North America, Europe, Oceania). Little is known about caregiving in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, where the majority of the world’s population resides. To address this underrepresentation, papers in this symposium examine aspects of caregiving, household resources, and child well-being from preschool age to adolescence in Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Using a longitudinal design, paper 1 examines the effect of household income on adolescent well-being in China, and identifies distinct income trajectories. Focusing on caregiving, paper 2 reports on perceptions regarding distribution of childcare responsibilities in Türkiye and the UK, and paper 3 examines distribution of caregiving and household tasks, along with parenting stress and practices among mothers in Costa Rica. Both of these studies also address gendered division of caregiving responsibilities. Focusing on a specific dimension of parenting, Paper 4 assesses the role of perceived normativeness in the association between parental psychological control and preschoolers’ relational aggression in Hong Kong. Overall, papers in this symposium contribute to advancing literature on caregiving and parenting practices, critical resources for child development like household income, as well as their impact on child well-being in the Majority World.
