Capturing Dynamic Child by Educational Context Interactions
School experiences have been shown to promote the emergence and refinement of children's cognitive skills, shaping cognitive control, memory, and language development (e.g., Morrison, Kim, Connor, & Grammer, 20189; Grammer & Torres, 2021). However, even within the same classroom the nature of the individual children’s experiences - and, in turn, learning opportunities - can vary greatly.
In this symposium, each of the four presenters will share work designed to explore dynamic child by educational context interactions. Drawing on correlational and experimental studies, evidence for the importance of considering both individual child-level characteristics and unique experiences within educational settings of importance for language use, student attention, and memory skills will be described. In doing so, presenters will share insight into the development and use of the measures designed to capture children’s experiences and skills in real-world settings. Specifically, each paper uses novel methodologies to more accurately capture children’s behaviors, experiences, and responses to instruction. In addition, the experiences of neurodiverse learners, including students with autism and ADHD will be explored. Taken together, these papers introduce new ways of conceptualizing and capturing children’s experiences in educational contexts.
