Implementation of parenting programs in Brazil
Despite the inclusion of early childhood development within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, it is estimated that 43% of children globally under five years old are at risk of not achieving their developmental milestones (Lu, C, et al 2016; Walker, SP et al 2007, Walker, SP et al 2011). Interventions tailored to address the health, nutritional, and psychosocial needs of children are critical to decrease these inequities in early childhood development (Shonkoff, J. et al, 2012). Parenting interventions, designed as social and behavioral programs, aim to enhance caregivers’ knowledge, attitudes, practices, and skills to foster optimal early child development. There is a wide variation in the impact of parenting programs effect sizes on child developmental domains across trials (Jeong et al, 2021). Therefore, more evidence is needed to elucidate determinants of programs effectiveness across diverse settings (Aboud et al., 2018), such as implementation processes. This debate is especially relevant to programs implemented in the Global South, where the majority of children under 5 who are stunted, wasted or overweight reside (UNICEF, 2018). This symposium will address the implementation of two parenting programs with differing delivery mode in Brazil. The Criança Feliz program has reached 3028 out of 5,570 Brazilian municipalities and delivered over 57 million home visits as of 2021. Home visits are delivered weekly by the social assistance system. The Parents in Action program is a self-administered online intervention including activities and videoconferences with a psychologist.
