Successful pathway to an academic life in and outside the U.S. for Asian scholars
This session is part of the programming of the Asian Caucus and represents the perspective of the presenters and has not been reviewed or endorsed by the Society for Research in Child Development and/or the Society’s Governing Council.
Hosted by the SRCD Asian Caucus
Asian scholars pursuing academic careers across international borders bring strengths, resilience, and adaptability to their professional journeys, while also facing unique challenges. This Conversation Roundtable, organized by the SRCD Asian Caucus, addresses the distinctive experiences of Asian scholars, particularly those educated in one country with the intention of building careers in another. Tailored for senior graduate students, early-career scholars (e.g., post-docs, tenure-track professionals), and those transitioning to mid-career, this session will explore topics such as international job-seeking strategies, navigating tenure-track roles across diverse institutions (e.g., R1, R2, small liberal arts colleges, and non-U.S. institutions), and overcoming barriers to international funding and fostering cross-cultural professional relationships. The session also covers personal adjustments, including transitioning from student to professional roles and managing culture shocks and reverse culture shocks when moving across countries or institutions. How to promote personal well-being will be discussed as well, including maintaining a work-life balance and building resilience.
