Identifying and changing setting level process to promote anti-racism
To promote racial equity and antiracism in schools and other youth spaces, scholars need to understand (and develop strategies to change) racialized processes at structural levels that pose barriers to desired outcomes. This paper symposium focuses on identifying setting-level processes that promote or impede anti-racism. In paper 1, the authors present the results of a systematic literature review that examined race conscious approaches to racial inequities in school discipline and perceived school climate. The most common approaches highlightes processes within classrooms (building relationships, pedagogy) rather than in systems (hiring, recruiting, involving families) and occurred at the district rather than the state, federal, or national level. In paper 2, based on qualitative interviews with diverse adolescents, the authors present descriptive data pertaining to the racialized patterns that students report having observed in schools and other settings, called racial regularities. They argue that changing these regularities are a necessary pre-requisite to promoting anti-racism within settings. In paper 3, the authors present results of 3 experimental studies in which US adults evaluated teacher applicants who invoked either a system blame or an individual responsibility narrative for explaining racial inequities. Among the most notable findings was that system blame narratives were evaluated more favorably, but only when the hypothetical candidate was White (rather than Black). The authors discuss study findings as they pertain to barriers to teaching and learning about structural inequality. The discussant, a seasoned expert in conceptualizing setting-level change, will integrate findings across the presentations to stimulate dialogue about promoting antiracism within settings.
