Everyday Experiences in Asian American Racial-Ethnic Socialization: Research Considerations for Informing Practice
The surge in anti-Asian sentiments during the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with heightened media attention on Asians, such as the Supreme Court decisions on admissions, has intensified the ongoing public discourse surrounding Asian identity in the U.S. Despite this increased focus, research on the development of identity and the processes of racial-ethnic socialization (RES) within Asian American (AA) families and communities remains relatively limited. Our proposed symposium presents four perspectives on everyday experiences reflecting RES among AA parents, teenagers, and peers. Paper 1 describes a NIH-funded project on AA racial socialization (Building Our Bonds Authentically; The BOBA Project) and preliminary feedback from Chinese American parents and their teens (12-18 years) regarding discussion-based tasks on race. Paper 2 examines engagement data among AA parents and middle school youth involved in a randomized control trial of a video-based racial-ethnic socialization (One Talk at a Time; OTAAT). Both papers shed light on the significance of conversations about race while also highlighting existing barriers to such discussions. Paper 3 broadens the perspective by examining peer RES alongside family RES among high school students, illustrating how within-person shifts, such as everyday experiences, are linked to various youth outcomes. The last presentation centers the personal voices of an Asian American parent and teen (non-academic, community stakeholders), their experiences in talking about race and reflections on their identity. By featuring cutting-edge research on Asian American racial socialization processes across different domains and incorporating personal reflections, our symposium aims to facilitate the translation of this knowledge into practice.
